PERSONALITY:

"I want to be *the* Queen." These words sum up Margaery's goals and entire motivation through the series of Game of Thrones. She is ambitious, rivaling Cersei and Littlefinger. In her pursuit to wear the crown and be the Queen of Westeros, Margaery does not let morals or fear get in her way. She takes on the Lannisters, marrying first Joffery, a boy she knows is a monster, without reservation. When he passes, she sets her sights on Tommen, going to any extreme to earn his loyalty and devotion. She seeks the love of the people of King's Landing, knowing they will help make her powerful by loving her with a fervency that Cersei cannot match. She uses them and her husbands as weapons to rise higher and secure the crown, though the struggle seems to always be ongoing.

Margaery is shrewd and adept. She's a cunning liar, able to fool numerous people who have played the Game of Thrones for some time. She hid herself behind a mask, concealing her real thoughts and feelings, instead adopting what others wanted to see for her advantage. The High Sparrow often sees through Cersei's lies and the tricks of others, but he is fooled by Margaery's devotion, used as a tool to gain her brother's freedom and to secure her return to court. When questioned by Joffery about her relationship with her first husband and Joffery's rival, Renly, Margaery is able to diffuse his anger by acting as though she were appalled and disgusted by Renly's activities and preference for men. In reality, she actively encouraged it and offered to let him bring her brother into the bedroom, if only so she could become pregnant to protect him. When she tries to earn Tommen's respect, she easily switched her supposed devotion from Joffery by playing a similar tactic, talking about how cruel Joffery could be.

She is a chameleon, able to transition from one persona to the next in an effort to get what she wants and earn the love and trust of whomever she needs to help her rise higher. Renly needed someone to help shield him from accusations and to act as an adornment to his court. For Joffery, she was sensual but innocent. She played into his enjoyment for killing things by asking questions and showing an interest in his weapons. When he mocked and tormented others, she was quick to laugh (even though she was later to show disgust in her more private moments). For Tommen, she acts as a devoted wife and motherly figure. She behaves as though their marriage is one of love and she respects his position as king, despite it being clear that he is weak.

This is not to say that her manipulations and lies are vindictive and cruel, they are simply a means to an end. While there is a benefit for her to show charity and kindness for the poor, there is reason to believe that it is done out of genuine regard. She was active in Highgarden with charitable works and has a reputation for kindness. She reaches out to Sansa, who is lonely and miserable, befriending her and offering to help her. There is motive and something in it for Margaery, namely that Sansa, who is regarded as a powerful card to hold, would be in her control. However, Sansa would be out of King's Landing and away from Joffery's torture. It's unlikely Sansa would have been miserable or that Margaery would have been cruel to her. So while Margaery gained power from Sansa's friendship, she truly was trying to help, even going so far as to comfort her before Sansa's wedding to Tyrion.

She is always active in the game, calculating each move as a chess master. While she can be caught and outmaneuvered, she is usually adept at reading the situation and knowing a potential threat. The best example of this is in her final episode. Cersei doesn't come to trial at the Sept, and knowing the repercussions of that, Margaery is able to understand that Cersei has no intention of suffering those consequences. She instructs everyone to leave the Sept, but she isn't believed in time, which leads to the Sept being destroyed by Wildfire. Earlier in the season, she warns her brother to be discreet about his affairs, knowing it could be used as ammunition and that their position was still tenuous. However, he disregards her and continues on, eventually leading him to be imprisoned by the Sparrows, along with Margaery for trying to lie to protect him.

More than anything, she genuinely loves her family. While imprisoned, she puts up with the torture and abuse, believing that she could beat them by staying strong. However, when she is faced with all they have done with her brother, her resolve begins to give way. She likely would have held out if he did not beg her to help him and make it stop. She returns to the game and becomes a chameleon again, shifting into a devoted Sparrow, spouting their philosophies and altering how she once lived (specifically her interest in sex). She even converts Tommen, earning the High Sparrow's trust. All of this done to protect Loras, her brother. When she discovers her grandmother will soon be arrested, she sends her away and tells her to go home, thus saving her from a similar fate.

Fighting two opponents on two sides, trying to outmaneuver them both left Margaery vulnerable, allowing Cersei to get the upper hand. However, Margaery was shrewd enough to render her powerless on her own. This came from an ability to read and spy a person's weaknesses. She recognized Joffery's need for approval, encouraging him to try and win the people's love, thus putting him more under her control. With Tommen, she played on his desire to be free from his mother and to be a strong king by talking about how nice it was that his mother was nearby, protecting him. She knew where to strike Cersei as well, taking her sons from her and earning their love for herself, as well as playing one her insecurities at her loss of youth and beauty.

For all of her lies and manipulations, there exists an honesty in Margaery. In public, she might adopt a persona, but in private, she is honest about her thoughts. She makes a wry comment about Joffery's cruelty to her grandmother, making her dislike of him plain. With Renly, she points out that he will only be strong and safe, so long as he has an heir. She doesn't hide that she knows who he prefers and that they have to survive by playing the game together. With Sansa, she tries to show her that she understands the ways of men and sex, offering her comfort. However, Sansa is too naive to understand, so Margaery returns to the role of innocence rather than shock her. She is especially honest with her family, discussing strategy with her grandmother and trying to keep Loras focused on the task at hand.

She is regarded as being extremely beautiful and knows how to use that to her advantage. Seduction is very easy for her, something that she relies on to earn men's trust. She uses it to keep Joffery and Tommen enthralled and to earn more of their loyalty and trust. While we don't actually see this, there are a few off handed comments made by Loras and Margaery that indicate she has enjoyed a healthy sex life before marriage. She remarks to Sansa that pleasing women takes a lot of practice and not all women know what they want until they try it. Loras tells Renly that "officially", Margaery is a virgin. It's easy to surmise then that while in Highgarden, Margaery had a few sexual affairs and learned how to use her beauty as a weapon.

She is one of the many complex morally gray characters that Game of Thrones characters that the saga is famous for. While she can be considered a "protagonist", it's for all the reasons above that Margaery is more than meets the eye.

POWERS/ABILITIES: While not a "superpower" per se, Margaery has an innate sense of how to spot lies and lie herself, becoming a chameleon. She is also extremely seductive and beautiful.
